Why have the dance in the afternoon?
"Tea dances" were popular in the early twentieth century. These occurred in the afternoon between 4-7 pm.
Before the Stonewall Riots, homosexuality was illegal. It was illegal to gather just like it was for addicts in the early days of NA.
After Stonewall, gays and lesbians would have "T-dances" in their summer rental communities on Fire Island. This was a safe place to gather without the fear of arrest.
They became very popular and soon was adopted in straight communities. These dances would move to night time and thus was born the dance clubs of the 70's, 80's and 90's.
